Comments:

People have always asked me what I want to be when I grow up, and my answer has been as steady and consistent as the Rock of Gibralter:

"I WANT TO BE TALLER WHEN I GROW UP!"

School Story:

Yes, I'm the one who went to Gonzalez Elementary and Nimitz Jr. Hi, but the one who bailed on you guys after our sophomore year at Permian. Hey, don't blame me! I wanted to stay and finish out my schooling at Permian, but it was like, "YOUR NAME IS CLARK, RIGHT?... DOINK! GET IN THE CAR!!" So, off to San Antonio we went (not San Angelo as some had heard). I finally graduated from Winston Churchill HS, where I learned about Texas A&M and went to college there. Funny thing, though: you can take the boy outta Odessa, but you can't take the Odessa outta the boy. I ended up in a dorm room at Aggieland right next to Kenny Mueller! Must be karma. Or gas. I never could distinguish the two. ;)

Fun story. Sorry I missed you at A&M. There were lots of us there in class of 1979.

There is a podcast published in 2019-2020 called BoomTown for which any one from west Texas can relate... or so I believe. Think: the boom and bust of the oil patch. It's the brainchild of Christian Wallace, who actually grew up in Andrews, played football there, went to Europe for a graduate degree, then came home to work the oil patch to pay off his student debt. Sound familiar? I'm not sure I agree with all of it, but overall I'd say it is well done. It is about as comprehensive a capture of the nuances of (modern) west Texas as you'll find. It is co-produced by Texas Monthly.

Hello, David! This is John Clark. We were in a number of grade school classes together at Gonzalez Elementary: Mrs Hunnicutt's 3rd grade and Mrs Grubbs 4th grade, at least. So glad to see you on here! You may recall that I left Odessa after our Sophomore year; moved to San Antonio and finished high school there. I was worried for years that folks wouldn't remember me, but I attended the 45th reunion this past June (it was delayed two years due to the pandemic/economic shutdown) and was warmly received by so many folks. It was great! We're already talking plans for the 50th reunion, and I do hope to see you there! Take care, my old friend from long ago!

OK, the first photo is my Sr. pic at Churchill HS in San Antonio. I guess you can see where I got the nickname in college of "Cotton." Unfortunately, by now I need to edit that name to "Boweevil"... cuz' that's just about what it is nowadays. Let's just put it this way: "hair" is truly a 4-letter word in my vocabulary!
